JOHNSTON, IOWA (August 13, 2024) — Whopper, a steer raised by Emma Norman of Searsboro, Iowa and selected by the Iowa Bankers Association (IBA), won the 2024 Governor’s Charity Steer Show Grand Champion. The show took place on Aug. 10 in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines and raised a record $568,000 to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Iowa.
The IBA has won more Governor’s Charity Steer Show championships than any other sponsoring company since the origin of the show. The IBA has sponsored a steer in the show every year since 1985.
“The IBA is honored to be a part of this great event,” said Mike Rozenboom, legal counsel for the IBA, who also works on all agricultural-related issues for the association. “It has been a pleasure to work with the Norman family this year and to see the positive impact the show has on show winners and the Ronald McDonald House Charities,” added Rozenboom. “A special thanks to Don Foley, retired IBA employee, for his role in the steer selection and showing.”
Since 1983, the steer show has highlighted the accomplishments of young producers by having Iowa celebrities show the steers at the fair. This year’s IBA-sponsored steer was shown by Jeff Angelo, WHO Morning Show host.
With this win, Angelo became one of five notable people who have won the Governor’s Charity Steer Show multiple times. Those that have collected multiple wins include Gov. Kim Reynolds, former Gov. Terry Branstad, former Gov. Tom Vilsack and Mark Pearson, an honorable television and radio personality.
All show proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Iowa, which provide housing facilities for family members of seriously ill children being treated in local hospitals. Ronald McDonald houses are in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City.
