Knoll: Finding a Path in Banking
When Melanie Knoll started at City State Bank 22 years ago, she quickly realized that she had the opportunity to explore other areas of the bank and to grow a job into a career. Now, after earning her CRCM certificate, Knoll is VP, compliance and CRA officer for City State Bank. “I’ve been fortunate to get several opportunities that led me to that point – I never would have thought a part-time teller position would lead me into a career as a compliance officer, but it did and obtaining my certification has been an affirmation that I took the right path,” she said.
Knoll wants to remind people that banking is much more than numbers. There are many areas of banking that not everyone sees. “Always be open to new opportunities – which can come around a lot in community banking – it is a great way to explore different areas and find the spot that fits,” she said.
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
It’s hard to pick one particular achievement. However, I think being able to explore several areas and continuing to grow a job into a career has been a great overall achievement. If I’m getting specific, obtaining my CRCM certification a couple of years ago was a highlight. I’ve been fortunate to get several opportunities that led me to that point – I never would have thought a part-time teller position would lead me into a career as a compliance officer, but it did and obtaining my certification has been an affirmation that I took the right path.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
Take the job and learn everything you can. Always be open to new opportunities – which can come around a lot in community banking – it is a great way to explore different areas and find the spot that fits.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is more than just numbers – there are so many directions it can take you. I think it is common for people to hear about banking, allow their thinking to go straight to numbers and assume that it’s not the career for them. However, keeping an open mind and looking for the opportunities has served me well over the years.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
IBA is a great partner for community banks. They provide quality education resources, but the peer groups they coordinate and the ability to serve on committee’s is an even bigger asset. IBA truly wants input from those they represent to be able to campaign for community banks.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
When I’m not chauffeuring my two boys to various activities, I enjoy spending time in the kitchen, reading and being outdoors on our family farm.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
I have a sticky note in my desk drawer with the quote – “Don’t sacrifice quality for quantity”. It can be easy to get wrapped up in go-mode in life and work, but the quantity won’t matter if the quality isn’t there as well.
