Wells Driven by Passion for Economic Growth

1 18 Wells, MaryThroughout Mary Wells’ career, she has gained experience in economic and community development at organizations such as the Goodhill Company and Main Street Centerville. Her enthusiasm for the economy has led her to serve on the Enhance Iowa Board, which she was appointed to in 2019 by Gov. Kim Reynolds, and the board of directors for the Appanoose Industrial Corporation. “My passion for banking is deeply rooted in my commitment to driving economic growth and nurturing strong community relationships,” she said.

That passion recently brought her to the banking industry, where today she is the marketing officer at Iowa Trust and Savings Bank in Centerville. “My focus lies in building our brand through strategic marketing initiatives, managing public relationships and driving business development efforts,” she said.

What drove you to choose a career in banking?

My passion for banking is deeply rooted in my commitment to driving economic growth and nurturing strong community relationships. When the opportunity to represent our locally owned bank presented itself, it was a perfect fit for my aspirations.

What is one lesson working in the banking industry has taught you, and how do you apply it to your everyday life?

Strive to make a positive impact, no matter how small, in every interaction and decision. I firmly believe that everyone deserves to be seen, valued and heard. Rather than focusing solely on our own responses, it is important to actively listen and understand to benefit all parties involved.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

“Banking offers a unique opportunity to directly contribute to the success of local businesses and communities. It extends far beyond financial matters, allowing individuals to assume leadership roles in various capacities and make a meaningful impact in their communities.”

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

Active participation in the Iowa Bankers Association has significantly broadened my knowledge of the latest trends and best practices in the banking industry. Furthermore, it has facilitated the development of valuable partnerships that benefit both our bank and the community we proudly serve.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

Outside of work, I am deeply committed to engaging in local community initiatives and giving back to the community. I enjoy outdoor pursuits such as hiking and exploring the natural beauty of Iowa. Additionally, spending quality time with my loved ones, including my children, grandchildren and friends truly brings me joy.

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

I live by the Golden Rule, treating others as I would like to be treated. Prioritizing people and focusing on building strong relationships and impactful partnerships are the cornerstones of my approach to community development. This guiding principle forms the foundation of everything I do, both professionally and personally.”
