When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
I cannot narrow it down to any specific time or circumstance, but would instead have to say getting to the position I am currently in as a loan officer is my biggest accomplishment. When I came into banking six years ago, I had zero knowledge of the banking industry and started studying and learning as much as I could about different regulations and scenarios until I gathered enough knowledge to bring me where I am today.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone to try something completely different and ask lots of questions. There’s quite a bit of jargon in the banking world and sometimes it takes extra curiosity and initiative to dive in and learn what something means.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
If you’re someone looking to start a new career full of opportunities to grow, learn and help others, banking can fulfill all that and more. A career path in banking allows you the chance to use and gain new skills in finance, problem solving, and customer service while giving you the opportunity to teach these same skills to the community through customer relations. Banking is also a great way to build strong connections within your community.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
By being involved with the Iowa Bankers Association, I have been able to network with other banks/bankers to gain knowledge in areas I am seeking help with. The different trainings have not only helped to learn, grow, and advance in my career, but have also helped me establish relationships with others in the same field.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I love to be outside and travel. My son and I enjoy going on hiking and camping trips together. Whenever we get the chance to hop in the car and head off to somewhere new and explore, we seize the opportunity.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
I can’t say I live by a specific quote, but I try my hardest to live a Godly life—love others, help when able, and work hard at everything I do.
