IBA Member Spotlight: Jennifer Gaeta

JenniferG8Gaeta Connects with the Community Through Banking

Five years ago, Jennifer Gaeta started her career in banking. She worked hard to learn more and grow her skills while connecting with the community. Now, she is a personal banker at American State Bank. “I know a lot of people think bankers only deal with money and numbers, but it goes far beyond that. You become part of the community through volunteering and events.”

Gaeta strives to always do her best, when it comes to work and her character. “If everybody would put aside their desire to have what others have, and focus on helping their neighbor instead, this world would be very different. I try hard to be compassionate, understanding and above all, I try to stay humble. There are always eyes on you, and I believe you should lead by example.”

When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?

I only got into banking about five years ago and have learned so much in those short years! I am very proud that I was to be able to start as a customer service representative and continued to work and learn enough to be able to move into different positions at the bank. I absolutely love what I am doing right now.

What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

There are so many great opportunities that come your way when you choose to go into the banking industry. I know a lot of people think we only deal with money and numbers, but it goes far beyond that. You become part of the community through volunteering and events.

What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?

There are many different departments at a bank, from the front-end interacting with customers to doing back-end work in the bookkeeping department. You will find a spot that best suits you!

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?

Being part of the Iowa Bankers Association is hugely valuable to me and my bank. The training programs allow me to keep learning while also being able to help others along the way.

When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?

When I’m not at work I’m hanging out with my family: two boys, Greyson (10) and Rome (7), and their dad, Luke. Being a boy mom is something else! If I’m not at hockey practice, you can find me leading Cub Scouts, hiking random trails, playing catch with the boys, booking trips to the middle of nowhere, going to concerts and occasionally, taking a much needed nap, that is, if the laundry is done!

What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

Be kind! There is no need for rude comments, jealousy or bad vibes. If everybody would put aside their desire to have what others have, and focus on helping their neighbor, this world would be very different. I try hard to be compassionate, understanding and above all, I try to stay humble. There are always eyes on you, and I believe you should lead by example.
