Relationships: Key Element of Banking for Kenne
Deb Kenne started in banking 29 years ago at Farmers State Bank. She utilized that time to hone in her skills and to develop relationships. Now, she uses that experience every day as she is senior vice president and manages the Algona location of Farmers State Bank. She is also the bank’s compliance officer and does some consumer, commercial and real estate lending. “Over the years, I grew both as an individual as well as a team member through my many positions at the bank. I learned that hard work, dedication and being compassionate in all you do allows you to not only grow as a person but also teaches you how to build great relationships with customers, coworkers and peers”
Kenne has found that relationships are one of the key elements to success – in both her personal and professional life. “Being confident, compassionate and concise with the people in your life will help you succeed both personally and in any career you choose to pursue … I am proud of every relationship I have developed over the 29 years I’ve been here with both my customers and coworkers within the bank and my fellow community bankers outside the bank.”
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
I began my banking career at Farmers State Bank in my 20s as a front-line teller. Over the years, I grew both as an individual as well as a team member through my many positions at the bank. I learned that hard work, dedication and being compassionate in all you do allows you to not only grow as a person but also teaches you how to build great relationships with customers, coworkers and peers. I am proud of every relationship I have developed over the 29 years I’ve been here with both my customers and coworkers within the bank and my fellow community bankers outside the bank. Many of those relationships have helped me shape the person I am today.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?

How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
I cannot express how wonderful the IBA is and how much they have helped me grow my career in banking. From the moment I was hired, the IBA became a huge part of my professional development. The schools, conferences, webinars – everything the IBA offers, has helped me and my team learn and grow in all areas of the bank. The compliance team and peer groups are such great resources for our team. Plus, the IBA’s leadership program is top notch! The staff at the IBA truly strive to help all community bankers succeed in every way.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
In the summer, my husband and I love to spend time at our lake cabin with our three adult children and their spouses along with our four grandchildren. Making memories with these people is one of the biggest joys in my life. We also like to watch the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
My favorite quotes are “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give” – Winston Churchill and “Make your heart the most beautiful thing about you”.
