Dunford Answers Call to Return to Banking
Ashley Dunford started working as a bank teller while in high school. She continued working as a teller while earning her degree in elementary education at the University of Northern Iowa. After graduating and spending two years in teaching, she returned to banking as a loan officer at Mount Vernon Bank & Trust. “I liked the flexibility and working with customers face-to-face,” she said.
Dunford says banking is all about giving customers a “trusted partner” to help them with their finances. “From checking and savings accounts, loans, investments and financial advice, we’re here to provide support and tools to make the most of your hard-earned money,” she said.
What drove you to choose a career in banking?
I never thought I wanted to be a full-time banker. I had always wanted to be a teacher and taught for a couple of years out of college. I had worked at the Mount Vernon Bank since High School as a teller and continued working there through college. After a couple of years of teaching, I decided to take on a full-time position at the Mount Vernon Bank as a loan officer. I liked the flexibility and working with customers face-to-face.
What is one lesson working in the banking industry has taught you, and how do you apply it to your everyday life?
One lesson I have learned working in the banking industry is the value of financial literacy. It’s important to understand how money works, how to manage it, and how to make decisions on investing, saving and borrowing. Every customer has a different story and, when people have the resources and knowledge to make sound financial choices, they can take charge of their financial future. In my everyday life, I prioritize learning about personal finance.

How does getting involved with the IBA help you and your bank?
The IBA is a great resource for our bank. They provide many great resources — online training, in-person training, compliance help, etc. I am a part of the Consumer Credit School Advisory board, and I have been able to network and build relationships with many other bankers in Iowa. The wealth of knowledge the IBA provides is beneficial to my career.
