Hauck Impacts the Community Through Banking
Rachel Hauck, Vice President of Lending at Community Savings Bank in Marion, has found community banking to be incredibly rewarding because of the phenomenal impact you can make on your community. “Being a community banker means that you are a financial partner for your clients – you become a part of their successes and you help pick them up when times are tough,” she said.
Hauck lives by the ideal that “the secret of success is to do the common thing uncommonly well.” She encourages new bankers to incorporate this idea by first focusing on customer service and the basics of banking until they fully understand the ins and outs of all products and services that their banks offer. She added, “Be a problem-solver both for customers and for your co-workers!”
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
The most rewarding time in my career thus far was during the pandemic. Whether it was securing a PPP loan for a business that desperately needed it, walking a business customer thru an EIDL application, or helping people refinance their mortgage loan to make their monthly house payments more affordable, that time was incredibly rewarding. It was undeniable how much we could impact the lives of our customers and really help people in their time of need.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
Focus first on customer service and learning the basics of banking. The strongest bankers are those who know the ins and outs of every product and service offered by their bank and can help a customer with anything and everything they need. Be a problem-solver both for customers and for your co-workers!
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Community banking is incredibly rewarding because you can have such a phenomenal impact on your community. Community banks are the lifeblood of many Iowa communities. There is nothing better than helping a first-time homebuyer thru the process of investing in their first home or watching a business client cut the ribbon on their new business. Being a community banker means that you are a financial partner for your clients – you become a part of their successes and you help pick them up when times are tough.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
The IBA provides excellent training and education for bankers across the state. I recently graduated from the IBA School of Banking. It is an exceptional school and provides a wide base of knowledge for anyone looking to grow in their career.
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
In addition to spending time with my family, I am also a high school volleyball coach for Marion High School and am active with the parent group at my daughters’ elementary school. I enjoy working out and getting to play volleyball (both indoors and outdoors) with friends!
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?
