Curiosity and Hard Work Propels Lanning Forward
Julie Lanning started her banking career as in a career/operations role at First National Bank. She worked to learn more about her bank and rose to her current position as director of operations, EVP for Northwest Bank. Her advice to new bankers is to pitch in around the bank by saying yes to various projects and assisting co-workers when possible.
She also credits her success to finding her niche. “Be curious in all the different positions in banking. Just because you start in one area, don’t be afraid to job shadow or assist in other areas,” she said.
When looking back on your banking career, what achievement are you most proud of and why?
I have been blessed with gaining knowledge in multiple departments and roles throughout my career. I’ve enjoyed being in the Cashier/Operations role, then eventually Bank President while we were First National Bank. Our recent merger with Northwest Bank has allowed me to expand my operational talents as Director of Operations for Northwest Bank. All of these opportunities began by me being curious and learning how that bank operates early in my career. Pitching in, saying “yes” to projects, and assisting co-workers attributed to where I am today.
What piece of advice would you give to your past self or to anyone considering a career in banking?
Be curious in all the different positions in banking. Just because you start in one area, job shadow or assist in other areas. You will find your niche if you get a taste of all things banking.
What is your best elevator pitch for why banking is a great career?
Banking is a great career because you are helping your customers with their financial needs. Simple things like opening a savings account for an eight-year-old, a first loan for a young couple, to assisting with an estate account after someone is deceased. All of these things are a big deal to our communities in their time of joy, sorrow or new ventures.
How does getting involved with the Iowa Bankers Association help you and your bank?
Networking with other Iowa Bankers is the biggest benefit. I have learned so much from other bankers and created life long friendships. The classes and seminars are very useful too!
When you’re not at work, what do you like to do most?
I like to spoil my grandkids – they are located in Pella and Kansas City! So I am either eating great Dutch treats or fantastic BBQ! I love traveling with my husband which usually includes trout streams, nature or geocaching. You will also find me following my nephew as he performs with the drum corp, Phantom Regiment this summer.
What is a quote or guiding principle you live by?

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen – Hebrews 11:1
